More measurement

Maths

We have had a another busy time in maths this week, as we learned how to measure things using rulers and we compared weights using scales.  We discovered that we had to measure from 0 and not the end of our ruler! 

We had lots of fun as we experimented with different objects to see what would balance. Boy those knuckle bones are heavy!

Courage

Inquiry

Our inquiry topic for this term is about courage. We are learning how to be courageous and have begun researching New Zealand people who show or have shown courage.This week rooms 7, 1 and 2 had a special visit from a wonderful blind person and his guide dog.  The children  asked questions about the life of a blind person and the role of the guide dog. We used the information we gathered to write a report on guide dogs.

Maths 

We have been learning about measurement in maths.   We have been estimating the lengths of objects around the classroom by using benchmarks. We discovered that using our hands or our  feet is a great way to estimate 1  metre and 1/2 metre lengths and our little fingertip is useful for measuring cm objects.

Acrostic Poems

In writing this week we worked in buddies to create an acrostic poem about the ANZACs. We used the letters

and brainstormed words and sentences that would be suitable to use in our poem. Then we broke off into our buddy pairs and designed our poem.Here are a few of them...

 

                     

                     

ANZACs

ANZAC

We had an action packed first week back into the term.  We have begun Te Reo Kori and the children are currently involved in waiata.

We have been studying the ANZACs.  On Thursday, the children were involved in an ANZAC activity day with rooms 1 and 7.  They made ANZAC biscuits, packaging for their biscuits and poppy wreaths.  The children each made two biscuits, one for themselves and for the elderly in Feilding. The children wrote a special message on the packaging, in remembrance of the soldiers that died and the biscuits were delivered to the elderly later that day.

On Friday we had some special visitors to Halcombe school.  A few soldiers from Linton army camp came out in army trucks to talk to us. The children were allowed to climb inside the trucks, they had plenty of questions to ask the soldiers!

We finished off  learning about shadows by creating shadow men.  We built our shadow men sculptures out of tin foil. Then we glued them  onto coloured card and we took them outside into the sunshine and drew around their shadows.

Shared lunch with rooms 7 and 1

On the Wednesday of the last week of Term 1, we had a yellow shared lunch in celebration of our Sun.  We all wore yellow and brought something yellow to eat.  It was a scrumptious feast of cheese savories, egg sandwiches, yellow cupcakes, biscuits and other delicious goodies!
