What a crazy day!

Today it was crazy day and to celebrate we dressed up in our house colours.  We had a parade and danced around the courts.  Many of us bought a delicious burger at lunchtime.  We certainly looked crazy!

Athletics fun day

Last week we had an athletics fun day followed by sprints and house relays.  The kids had so much fun.  Thanks to the adults that came to support the children.  What a fun day!

Fake Bugs

Today we looked at fake bugs.  First we had to group them.  Some of the children grouped them into colours and sizes.  Then they were asked to group them a different way and many children began to group them according to their features such as ones with wings or 6 legs.  Afterwards the children did a pen share to record what they noticed about the bugs, here are a few of their comments...

The spider has not enough eyes

The ant is not that big

The cockroach is too fat 

It's the wrong size

The butterfly has 6 legs and it has hair

Easter

Happy Easter everyone...
On Wednesday the Juniors made Hot cross buns.  They looked delicious.  Everyone made one and got to eat it afterwards.

Alley Cats

After reading the big book A Party for the Alley Cats, we produced this wonderful art work and wrote fabulous stories to go with them.  Come a see our work hanging in the class.  First we sketched out the cats heads and then used water colours to fill in the outlines.  Once dried, we went over our lines in vivid and finished the background in smudged charcoal.  What fabulous artists you are!

The Big Book

Each week we read a big book together and every Friday we do an activity based on the big book.  Last week we read Mrs O'Malley in Alligator Alley.  We worked collaboratively to draw Mrs O'Malley walking through the Alligator Alley and made signs to warn her about the dangerous alligators.  Afterwards we each made our individual snapping alligators.  Well done room 1, great team work!

What is eating our plants?

This week we ventured out into our vegetable garden to find that something had been eating our plants.  We decided we needed to do some investigating! We went out with magnifying glasses and the ipads to see what we could find.  We discovered little green bugs ( we think they are caterpillars) all over the leaves.  We took a few back to class for a closer look.  We  looked through a special microscope that projected onto the t.v so we could find out what they looked like up close.  Here is what we saw...

Learning about Respect

This week we have been looking at the importance of respecting people, our classroom and the things within it.

We worked as a whole class to establish how we should respect our own and other peoples things, the classroom and our friends.  We worked in groups to produce a pic collage which will be displayed on our walls. Here are a few of them.

Learning to Observe

Yesterday we went out into our garden area and had a good look at things we could see.  We took photos and used our magnifying glasses to take a closer look at stuff.  We found all sorts of things among our vegetables! When we got back to class we talked about the things we saw.  This term we will be going out around school and off site to do some more digging, investigating and observations. We love Fridays at Halcombe, we get to do fun stuff such as buddy time.  Yesterday we had a buddy swim.  Thanks room 5 you are great buddies!

Yesterday Jess from NZ football came to teach the girls some great soccer games like Sharks and Frozen. The girls enjoyed learning the new skills and had a lot of fun.

Magic Number

Yesterday the children were given a number  to 20.  They had to complete certain tasks, such as write an addition and subtraction problem, find the number of objects, make the number out of lego etc.  They photographed all the tasks and created a pic collage on the ipads.

It has been great to have a full week back at school. We have managed to practise our literacy activities and establish routines.  Here are a few pictures of the children following their literacy contracts and engaging in their different literacy stations. Nice work room 1.

 

Kai Iwi Beach

Our Beach Trip

What a fantastic day we had at the Kai Iwi Beach.  The weather was perfect and the kids had such a fabulous day.  We walked around the beach looking at interesting things, digging in the sand, making discoveries and collecting shells.  We had fun using the magnets on the sand and looking through the magnifying glass at the shells and driftwood.  Our kind parent helpers assisted us with our sandcastle building and paddling in the sea.  We finished off the day with a play on the awesome pirate playground.  Even the teachers had a go!

Week one

Our First Week.

We had a busy but fun first week back.  We have done lots of activities around 'getting to know you' and friendships. We have been practising the new routines and procedures of the class, established our class rules, as well as learning math and literacy games. Our self portrait art is now hanging on our class wall.  Parents you are welcome to call in before or after school to come and see your child's work.

Science

To mark the end of our floating and sinking unit room 1 made boats and tested them out.  The children tested them to see if they would float as they raced them across the water tray.  There were some fabulous constructions.  Well done room 1.

Slip and Slide

Today we had our fun sports day at Halcombe.  We rotated around different activities and then later this afternoon we got to cool down with the slip and slide.  Thanks seniors you made the slip and slide super slippery and exciting to go down!

How to Make a Sailor Hat

We have been learning about floating and sinking for science.  Using the app book creator, we have written instructions on how to make a sailor hat .  Here are a few of the books.

Floating and Sinking

This week we began our science topic, Floating and Sinking.  We talked about things we know that float and sink e.g a boat.  Today we tested out various items to see whether or not that could float or sink. Parents, don't be alarmed if the children ask to drop things into water this weekend!

Out trip to Totara Reserve

Our Big Day Out

Today room 1 and 2 went to Totara Reserve for our bush walk and outdoor activities.

We were lucky with the weather and the children coped very well with the walk.  Thanks to our wonderful parent helpers that drove us out there and helped out with the activities, you were awesome.  It was a great day.  Here are a few pictures.
